PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Support Living at Home when possible rather than in institutions

● The average cost of assisted living in Pennsylvania is $3,555 per month. Semi-private nursing home units cost upwards of $9,600 per month. These costs can have detrimental effects on low-income families that do not have the time or means to care for a disabled or elderly family member at home without state-provided assistance. The DCDC supports any measure taken by Congress to install programs that can provide tax exemptions to families caring for a disabled or elderly family member, which, when  safeguarded by home nursing assistants to prevent abuse, could cut the state’s Medicaid expenses.

ADA Provision Enforcement

State legislators should approve of budget increases to implement and expand the benefits of the ADA, including, but not limited to, installing ramps at businesses and public works structures. The DCDC also supports:

●  PA HB 1363, providing for a bill of rights for individuals with intellectual disabilities or autism. Not only a bill for public relations, the legislation will further enforce the ADA in all decision making processes at the state level, and allow congress to reorganize the state budget as necessary to accommodate for the needs of all people.

●  PA SB 614, providing equal protections in the workplace to people of all races, colors, familial statuses, religious creeds, ancestries, ages, sexes, sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, national origins, handicaps, or disabilities.
