Helm Opposes Thompson’s Recovery Plan for Harrisburg

8/4/2011
Rep. Sue Helm (R-Dauphin) today released the following statement in response to Mayor Linda Thompson’s fiscal recovery plan for the City of Harrisburg.
Thompson’s proposal would impose a commuter tax should the state, Dauphin County and bond insurance company fail to cover any remaining debt associated with the city’s trash incinerator.
“I consider any effort by Mayor Thompson to impose a commuter tax to be ‘dead on arrival’. I join a number of my Dauphin County colleagues in the Legislature who have pledged to block any attempt to unfairly tax non-city residents. My hard-working constituents should not be expected to help pay for the financial mistakes made years ago by city leaders. I will vote in support of legislation that prevents the mayor from implementing such a levy.

“We all can certainly sympathize with the city’s plight, and I recognize its potential impact on the entire region, but there are other options available to resolving the debt crisis. A commuter tax is not part of the answer, and I will continue to do everything in my power as a state lawmaker to oppose it.”
