Former Swatara Twp. Commissioner to Represent South Central Caucus

Harrisburg, August 21 – Sylvia A. Waters, of Swatara Township, was elected August 21 to represent the South Central Caucus as an at-large member of the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee. Waters, who was elected and served as a Swatara Township Commissioner from 1992 to 1996, currently serves on the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. Waters was one of two female, at-large state committee members elected Saturday, and the only one from Dauphin County.

“Sylvia Waters is highly qualified to serve on state committee,” Dauphin County Democratic Committee Chairwoman Marilyn Levin said. “Sylvia will be a tremendous asset to the Dauphin County Democratic Party as we continue to register voters, elect Democrats, and work hard for working people.”

Waters, formerly a local Democratic office holder, was appointed by Governor Edward G. Rendell and confirmed by the Senate in July 2009 to serve on the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. She served previously as a commissioner from 1996 to 2004. During her tenure as a Swatara Township Commissioner, Waters was recognized by the Pennsylvania Association of Township Commissioners with their Outstanding Service Award for the Central Region.

Waters also served as director of The Office of Equal Opportunity for the Pennsylvania Department of Health from 1971 to 1986. She was recognized for programs designed to prevent sexual harassment and promote equal opportunities for people with disabilities and was named the Governor’s Office of Administration Woman of the Year in 1995.

A Message from Chairwoman Marilyn Levin

My Fellow and Sister Democrats,

We stand on the threshold of a new era for the Dauphin County Democratic Party, an era in which our tent grows bigger and our values grow stronger. We are about to set a new direction for our party. Our goal is to be inclusive and to WIN with the best candidates our county has to offer. Our Party will be representative of all of Dauphin County.

I am honored to have been elected as your Chairwoman on June 12. Over the next 4 years, I hope to earn your trust in my leadership as we build this party operation into a seamless political machine. As your chairwoman, I will do everything in my power to grow the Party.

We have much work ahead of us if we are to make the Democratic Party of this great county more inclusive, more representative, and more relevant.

We must open our ears to the sound of citizens calling for change. We must open our eyes to the opportunities for change not only in Harrisburg but throughout Dauphin County. And we must open our Party to people from all walks of life. Our strength lies in our ability to come together to put our shared values into action.

I am ready to lead our Party forward. We must be ready to unite under one flag. All too often, we have failed to achieve our goals because we have lacked the courage to look beyond what makes us different to see what makes us Democrats. I know that with your help, we will turn our registration edge into a voting majority.

We are the party of Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. We are also the party of Mayor Linda Thompson, Commissioner George Hartwick, Representative Ron Buxton, former Chairwoman and Susquehanna Township Commissioner Diane Bowman, and all of the committee women and men who have registered new voters, energized other voters, and won at the polls.

Together, we will take the Democratic Party to greater heights and lead Dauphin County in a new direction. We will fill our vacant committee seats, establish a headquarters, and convince new voters and independents to become Democrats. And we will welcome into our party moderate Republicans who have lost their home in the Republican Party to right-wing fanatics.

In the days and weeks ahead, you will receive a committee member handbook and you will start to see improvements in our Party communications. If you have any questions or ideas, I want to hear them. The Dauphin County Democratic Party will be only as successful as we make it. Welcome to the Party. Let us begin.

Democratically yours,

Marilyn Levin
Chairwoman, Dauphin County Democratic Committee
