“REPUBLICANS GAMING THE SYSTEM TO THEIR ADVANTAGE WILL HURT PENNSYLVANIA IN THE LONG RUN”

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

(Harrisburg, PA) – Republicans in Pennsylvania are trying to change the rules for their own short term political gains. Their radical plan will change how electoral votes are allocated and will mean the Commonwealth losing its electoral significance in Presidential elections.

“Pennsylvanian families are struggling on a check to check, day to day basis, to make ends meet. Families are scraping together nickels and dimes while counting on leaders to focus on creating jobs and repairing a damaged economy; instead Republicans are focused on making it easier for Republican politicians to get elected.” remarks DCDC Chairman Marilyn Levin.

“Not only is this the wrong priority, the Republican Party’s plan will also dilute Pennsylvania’s influence. In a state as large and diverse as Pennsylvania, losing our electoral significance will mean fewer presidential candidates bothering to be concerned with our communities and issues.

It’s a deviation from history which could have a profound impact on who wins Presidential elections – not just next year.

If this bill is passed, Pennsylvania will unilaterally disarm, giving up its influence on the Federal level thereby making Pennsylvania less important.”

DID YOU MISS THE DAUPHIN COUNTY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING?

On Saturday September 24th the Dauphin County Democratic Committe held its County Meeting. Our meeting was hosted at the AFSCME Conference Center. It was well attended and by the end of the early morning breakfast/networking event – Democrats left with a renewed sense of urgency and unity!

“Giving a speech in any setting can be a daunting task. Motivating your base to work in tandem for one common goal is an enormous responsibility. My goal for this speech was to incorporate my “quirky” sense of humor while addressing some serious issues. Once the air was “cleared” I felt we could put aside personalities and work for the people. I hope you’ll accept my remarks with the humility and passion intended.”Marilyn Levin, Chairman

READ CHAIRMAN LEVIN’S MOTIVATING REMARKS HERE: Also click on the live link to read District Attorney Candidate Phil Zulli’s Remarks.

Good morning and welcome to the Dauphin County Democratic Committee meeting. Let me begin by thanking you all for your contributions to the DCDC. Without volunteering your time and energy, there would be no progress.

It has been a little over a year since you elected me Dauphin County Democratic chairman. It’s been quite the ride.

When I took on this leadership role I didn’t automatically become a popular person.

But that’s because there were variables no one really takes into consideration.

Once elected you have a sense of excitement, you’re filled with all the goals you want to accomplish, you’re eager to take charge, and you’re consumed with doing things the way you’ve always dreamed.

This is normal human behavior.

What’s also normal is having such a sense of zeal that you may overlook the fact that the outgoing administration may have gotten into a comfortable groove, and as we enter the arena of leading with our own groove, sometimes the leadership needle gets stuck in the groove.

For you younger Democrats —- sometimes the CD scratches or the mp3 doesn’t fully download.

I’m sure if I asked, you can list the things you don’t like about the ways of the DCDC. —– I’m quite sure. —- I’ve read the emails, forums, tweets and blogs so I’m quite literally sure you can and some of you have listed them.

In retrospect there are many things I would have done differently during our first year together; going forward please know that I am listening. I am also learning to put my trust in the committee first because it’s important to work together to create and implement great ideas to win elections and demonstrate the power and unity of the Democratic Party.

As some you roll your eyes inside your head in exasperated disbelief I hope you can see that above all else my dedication to winning elections is at the forefront of all that I do.

We may not agree on methodology, we may disagree on who chairs what, on Roberts’s rules of order, on perceived tyrannical opinions and sweeping executive orders but we can all agree on one very fundamental thing — this November we want Democrats elected to public office! My one wish is that the ripples of disagreement within our county party wash away beneath an unshakable bridge of unity.

It’s not all bleak!  There are many things we have accomplished to be proud of.

The DCDC has hosted multiple voter registration drives from one end of the county to the other; many previously vacant committee positions have been filled by talented, passionate, people who share the Democratic agenda. The “are you a democrat” card has generated enough
curiosity to compel people to email or inquire about registration.

Congress woman Debbie Wassermann Schultz came to our county for an extremely successful fund raiser. As if bagging Debbie Wassermann
wasn’t impressive enough, we had the honor of Minority Whip Congressman Steny Hoyer standing up for labor with us.

Think about it. The DCDC organized over 300 Democrats from both the city and the suburbs at one event where we incidentally introduced
the late peter c. Wambach award and presented it to Lower Paxton committee man Jay Purdy.

We’ve ramped up our marketing and communications by getting into the Twitter game, joining the Facebook community and revamping our website to disseminate information in a timely and entertaining fashion.

People want to know what Democrats are doing, how we are doing it and how they can help — we have our finger on the pulse of the county.

It is my goal to have all of our diligent efforts posted on our website so everyone is aware of the hardworking, dedicated volunteers of the DCDC.

There are many more things in store for the DCDC because we firmly believe by motivating our base we motivate them to get out and vote Democrat!

That is the point of today —- nothing is more important that what lies ahead of us. The election of the Democratic team led by Hartwick- Jackson this November!

On behalf of the DCDC I am very proud to be the woman standing here today to share with you that we have gathered the most qualified team of Democrats in Dauphin County history!

  • George Hartwick & Wendy Jackson for County Commissioner
  • Jeff Goble – Sheriff
  • Phil Zulli – District Attorney  (Click here to read Phil Zulli’s remarks in full)
  • John Coleman – County Controller
  • Evelyn Zigerelli – Henderson – Clerk of Courts
  • Eboni Bryant – Register of Wills
  • Rogette Harris – Clerk of Orphan’s Court
  • David Wecht – Superior Court Judge
  • Kathryn Boockbar – Commonwealth Court Judge
  • Jeanine Turgeon – Court of Common Pleas

I invite you all to visit dauphindems.com  to learn more about each of these amazing candidates in depth.

Now, I would surely be remiss if I did not recognize the remarkably close county commission election results. Every soul in this room knows that Eric Papenfuse, ran an outstanding campaign, and we salute and respect him for his efforts.

The results are in, the election is over, we are all Democrats, our goal is singular, so now is the time to bring everyone together.

The DCDC recognizes not every candidate may be your cup of tea, but if we would put aside those tiny objections for the good of the bigger picture.

See it with me now.

It’s a pretty picture framed and matted hanging inside a Democratic controlled courthouse.

A Democratic courthouse which has been out of reach and control for two hundred thirty five years.

Two hundred thirty five years.

And all we have to do is get out of our own way.

We have the voter registration edge. Seventy one hundred voters.  Ten thousand more independents.

Our district leaders are working very hard to contact either by phone or in person 37,000 Democrats. Will you join us? Because this is it, our time, our goal, our mission is unifying to succeed. We are the party of visionaries, the party of leaders, and the party that really cares about the elderly, jobs, less prisons, more schools!

The voters deserve a reasonable approach to government not the tea party fanaticism espoused by the republic constitutients!

We must win!

We can win!

And by uniting as one party

We will win!

Ladies and gentleman, stand with me and salute the straight Democratic ticket our 2011 Democratic team.

Let us make history!

American Jobs Act: Impact for Pennsylvania

President Barack Obama outlines the details of the American Jobs Act during an address to a Joint Session of Congress in the House Chamber of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., Sept. 8, 2011. (Official White House Photo by Lawrence Jackson)

THE AMERICAN JOBS ACT: IMPACT FOR PENNSYLVANIA

The American people understand that the economic crisis and the deep recession weren’t created overnight and won’t be solved overnight. The economic security of the middle class has been under attack for decades.

That’s why President Obama believes we need to do more than just recover from this economic crisis – we need to rebuild the economy the American way, based on balance, fairness, and the same set of rules for everyone from Wall Street to Main Street. We can work together to create the jobs of the future by helping small business entrepreneurs, by investing in education, and by making things the world buys. The President understands that to restore an American economy that’s built to last we cannot afford to outsource American jobs and encourage reckless financial deals that put middle class security at risk.

To create jobs, the President unveiled the American Jobs Act – nearly all of which is made up of ideas that have been supported by both Democrats and Republicans, and that Congress should pass right away to get the economy moving now. The purpose of the American Jobs Act is simple: put more people back to work and put more money in the pockets of working Americans.

And it would do so without adding a dime to the deficit. The American Jobs Act has five components:

1. Tax Cuts to Help America’s Small Businesses Hire and Grow

   The President’s plan will cut the payroll tax in half to 3.1% for employers on the first $5 million in wages, providing broad tax relief to all businesses but targeting it to the 98 percent of firms with wages below this level. In Pennsylvania, 230,000 firms will receive a payroll tax cut under the American Jobs Act.

2. Putting Workers Back on the Job While Rebuilding and Modernizing America

   The President’s plan includes $50 billion in immediate investments for highways, transit, rail and aviation, helping to modernize an infrastructure that now receives a grade of “D” from the American Society of Civil Engineers and putting hundreds of thousands of construction workers back on the job. Of the investments for highway and transit modernization projects, the President’s plan will make immediate investments of at least $1,373,300,000 in Pennsylvania that could support a minimum of approximately 17,900 local jobs.

   The President is proposing to invest $35 billion to prevent layoffs of up to 280,000 teachers, while supporting the hiring of tens of thousands more and keeping cops and firefighters on the job. These funds would help states and localities avoid and reverse layoffs now, and will provide $1,155,300,000 in funds to Pennsylvania to support up to 14,400 educator and first responder jobs.

   The President is proposing a $25 billion investment in school infrastructure that will modernize at least 35,000 public schools – investments that will create jobs, while improving classrooms and upgrading our schools to meet 21st century needs. Pennsylvania will receive $944,000,000 in funding to support as many as 12,300 jobs.

   The President is proposing to invest $15 billion in a national effort to put construction workers on the job rehabilitating and refurbishing hundreds of thousands of vacant and foreclosed homes and businesses. Pennsylvania could receive about $20,000,000 to revitalize and refurbish local communities, in addition to funds that would be available through a competitive application.

   The President’s plan proposes $5 billion of investments for facilities modernization needs at community colleges. Investment in modernizing community colleges fills a key resource gap, and ensures these local, bedrock education institutions have the facilities and equipment to address current workforce demands in today’s highly technical and growing fields. Pennsylvania could receive $113,200,000 in funding in the next fiscal year for its community colleges.

3. Pathways Back to Work for Americans Looking for Jobs.

   Drawing on the best ideas of both parties and the most innovative states, the President is proposing the most sweeping reforms to the unemployment insurance (UI) system in 40 years help those without jobs transition to the workplace. This could help put the 211,000 long-term unemployed workers in Pennsylvania back to work.

   Alongside these reforms, the President is reiterating his call to extend unemployment insurance, preventing 97,500 people looking for work in Pennsylvania from losing their benefits in just the first 6 weeks. And, across the country, the number saved from losing benefits would triple by the end of the year.

   The President is proposing a new Pathways Back to Work Fund to provide hundreds of thousands of low-income youth and adults with opportunities to work and to achieve needed training in growth industries. Pathways Back to Work could place 4,700 adults and 16,000 youths in jobs in Pennsylvania

4. Tax Relief for Every American Worker and Family

   The President’s plan will expand the payroll tax cut passed last December by cutting workers payroll taxes in half next year. A typical household in Pennsylvania, with a median income of around $48,000, will receive a tax cut of around $1,490.

5. Fully Paid for as Part of the President’s Long-Term Deficit Reduction Plan.

   To ensure that the American Jobs Act is fully paid for, the President will call on the Joint Committee to come up with additional deficit reduction necessary to pay for the Act and still meet its deficit target. The President will, in the coming days, release a detailed plan that will show how we can do that while achieving the additional deficit reduction necessary to meet the President’s broader goal of stabilizing our debt as a share of the economy.

Bi-partisan Joint Statement by Leadership of the U.S. Conference of Mayors:

President Obama offered to Congress a set of proven, actionable solutions through The American Jobs Act, to finally end our country’s economic paralysis, help the unemployed find jobs again and put our people back to work.  These proposals represent a true Main Street plan – they address the needs of cities, which is where more than 80% of the U.S. population lives, and they will get our economy back on track. We commend President Obama for introducing the American Jobs Act and we urge Congress to take action immediately.

A September 11th Message from Chairman Levin

REFLECTION

Each person who experienced the tragic events of September 11, 2001 will remember vividly where you were, what you saw, what you lost and how you felt.

A wave of fresh pain will wash over shock and memories we’ve stored exactly 10 years ago. Most will choke back underlying tears followed by a renewed memory of how our Country, comprised of Democrats, Independents, Republicans, Moderates, Conservatives, Liberals, an amalgamation of Religious, Racial, Social, Economic, Political and in general life absorbing beliefs, effortlessly melded in unity to confront and combat our common enemy.

We had an inert understanding that we were Americans “first.”

“ONE”

In the 10 years since, our men and women in the Armed Forces continue to valiantly protect this land and all who inhabit it. These brave men and women are held in the highest regard and many Soldiers have given the ultimate honor of service to America, their lives.

Through impassioned teachers and new curriculum, our students have been made aware of the tremendous strength, courage and responsibility our soldiers, first responders, fire fighters and police officers shoulder on a daily basis.

New heroic images emerged from the rubble of the Pentagon, the debris in Somerset County and remnants of the Twin Towers.

For a time we were one.

BUILDING THE FRAMEWORK

How, in the midst of today’s political mayhem, do we continue to move forward to honor this day and all that it embodies?

We must pry open the time capsule of a 2001 post 9/11 American mentality. Grasp the moment when millions of broken hearts proudly wore determination on our sleeves, while searching for collective harmony.

A time where we banded together to recognize issues, develop plans and spring into action.

September 11 now serves as our National Day of Service and Remembrance.”  Remember our strong American extended “family” the tragic events of that day created. We are still “one.”

I respectfully urge every Democrat to observe a moment of silence and to participate in community service or volunteer in a charitable activity.

Remember always with determination, the memories stored, shock felt, and loss experienced. Release those underlying tears into renewing our faith that although we are a Country comprised of an amalgamation of life absorbing beliefs, we remain a strong people who will succeed by strengthening in unity to confront and combat our economic, social, health, environmental, political and universal needs.

Through these acts we will build the framework for new heroic images emerging today.

Democratically yours,

Marilyn L. Levin

President Obama’s “Jobs” Speech

Before heading to the Capitol tonight to present the American Jobs Act to a joint session of Congress, President Obama sent a message to supporters asking folks to put pressure on their lawmakers to take action on jobs.

“I’m about to head to the Capitol to ask Congress to act on my plan to put Americans back to work. Before I do, I wanted to write you directly to remind you that the fight to create jobs—and provide the kind of economic security for middle-class families that’s been slipping away over the last decade—won’t begin or end with the speech I give tonight. What happens will be up to you. In the coming days and weeks, it will be up to you to pressure Congress to act—or hold them accountable if they do not.If you’re with me, let me know. And the campaign will make sure you are looped into our efforts to support this plan. Talk to you soon, Barack”

While the President’s speech gave the American people an opportunity to see just how serious he is about “The American Jobs Plan” most of the real information happened after the speech. If you follow www.whitehouse.gov then you were able to participate in a panel discussion about the details of the “American Jobs Act.”

You were afforded an opportunity to ask your questions via Facebook, Twitter, email and an audience which was assembled. The event was one of many live stream programs held by the White House.
